California foundry to shift some production to Texas

AB&I Foundry, which melts ferrous scrap to make iron pipe and castings in Oakland, California, has reportedly indicated it will scale back output in Oakland as it shifts some production to Texas next year.

According to a March 12 online article by the San Jose, California-based Mercury News, the 115-year-old foundry, which is now part of Alabama-based McWane Inc., will be shifting the work in part because of “tightened environmental rules.”

The Mercury-News quotes AB&I General Manager Michael Lowe as saying, “We are heartbroken that about half of the workforce will be impacted through job losses when molding operations are moved out of California in 2022.”

News of the operational change has not yet been posted to either the AB&I or McWane websites as of March 15.
