AST Group, a European manufacturer of plastic containers, drums and bottles, has had a goal to increase the amount of recyclables used in its products and aims to supply its own raw materials. As a result, the company has partnered with Lindner Recyclingtech GmbH, a recycling equipment manufacturer based in Austria, to launch a new center of competence with a plastics recycling line to process postindustrial and postconsumer high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Lindner says it will be providing the system for the new center.

According to a news release on the partnership from Lindner, AST Kunststoffverarbeitung GmbH has produced packaging with approval for dangerous goods since 1977 in Erndtebrück, Germany. The company specializes in plastic containers for chemical products and food and is working to increase the sustainability of its products by using recycled content.

With the new center, AST wants to produce a sustainable flow of raw materials. The center of competence is a pilot project that will lean on the expertise of AST locations in southern Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Great Britain.

Additionally, the new center will use washing and sorting components from Lindner Washtech and shredders from Lindner Recyclingtech. Lindner is also responsible with AST for engineering the facility.

“We transform premium plastics into high-quality containers, drums and bottles and believe that this raw material should not go the general recovery route,” says Hauke Grabau, who is in charge of recycling at AST. “With the new center of competence, we want to retain this valuable material in the loop. My many years of experience in the field of plastics recycling have shown me that Lindner offers the best overall package and expertise in mechanically recovering polymers. We have seen from the very beginning that Lindner is willing to tackle new problems that we can learn from each other in the joint development of this project.”
