American Zinc Products (AZP), a Rutherford County, North Carolina-based subsidiary of American Zinc Recycling LLC, reports that it has completed two industrial-scale trials for the production of continuous galvanizing grade (CGG) zinc. CGG zinc, a zinc-aluminum alloy, reduces zinc losses and improves the surface finish of galvanized steel products produced from the continuous galvanizing process.

According to a news release from AZP, the high-purity and low-lead content of zinc produced by AZP makes it ideal to produce high-quality CGG zinc.

“We continue to be pleased with the progress being made at AZP, as we continue our ramp up 13 months after startup. We have now achieved another milestone for the operation, as we now have the capability to produce both specialty high grade and continuous galvanizing grade zinc,” says Joel Hawthorne, CEO of American Zinc Recycling.

AZP says the initial trial volume is seeing favorable market acceptance and cleared the way for the installation of a permanent CGG zinc production line at AZP. Once facility updates are complete, AZP reports that it will have access to a large market for CGG zinc in North America. According to the International Zinc Association, protecting steel against corrosion is an important market for zinc and represents 60 percent of use worldwide. AZP’s combined capacity for CGG and special high grade (SHG) zinc is 155,000 tons per year.

“AZR continues to provide a mission critical service to our electric arc furnace customers by recycling in an environmentally friendly way a hazardous material generated in their process and returning a highly valuable end-product to those same customers,” Hawthorne adds. “We are proud to have a key role in the drive for sustainable manufacturing that is exemplified by the steel recycling industry.”

According to AZP, it is one of only two zinc producers in the U.S. and is forecast to produce about 15 percent of total zinc consumption in the country once fully ramped up.
