Back Market, a leading global marketplace for refurbished electronics, says it has partnered with Asurion, a tech care company, to offer customers protection plans with additional repair and replacement options to help boost consumer confidence in buying and using refurbished devices. The protection plan from Asurion will complement Back Market’s existing one-year refurbisher warranty, giving customers the ability to protect their devices for longer and for a wider range of coverage, the Paris-headquartered retailer says.

Back Market customers can add this coverage for as little as $1.99 for two years when they buy a device on the Back Market marketplace. Through the new Protection Plan Coverage, Back Market customers receive:

• two years of coverage for all accidents during normal use: drops, spills and cracked screens;
• an additional year of coverage for mechanical and electrical failures caused by defects in materials and workmanship, as well as normal wear and tear and power surges;
• free repairs on home tech and electronics, including parts, labor and shipping; however, a service fee applies for mobile phone repair; and
• If a device can’t be repaired, Asurion will reimburse the purchase price of the device (less a small service fee for some smartphones).

“Our goal at Back Market is to make buying refurbished not just a smart and safe option, but the first choice,” says Lauren Benton, managing director at Back Market. “This partnership with Asurion allows us to continue to strengthen the value proposition of the circular economy in electronics. With such extensive coverage available, customers have even less of a reason to buy new.”

Asurion offers protection plans for a range of devices, including phones, laptops and tablets. Customers can file a claim online and have access to the Asurion repair network that includes in-person repair support at nearly 700 uBreakiFix by Asurion stores nationwide, or mail in the device for repair instead.
