Athens Services opens new Sustainability Center

Athens Services, City of Industry, California, announced the launch of its new Sustainability Center in Thousand Oaks, California. According to the company, the Sustainability Center is the first facility dedicated to environmental sustainability for Thousand Oaks residents and is a place where residents can come to learn about waste reduction, recycling and composting.

“We are so excited to offer a one-stop shop for our customers,” Athens Services VP of Government Affairs Rondi Guthrie says. “This will be a place to stop by to learn more about our recycling program, talk to a customer service representative about your bill, or to request a presentation from one of our recycling coordinators.”

The opening of the Sustainability Center comes after Athens Services was awarded the franchise waste and recycling collection contract for the city earlier this year. The agreement creates more than 50 jobs and aims to advance recycling and compliance with new organics waste regulations, Athens Services says.

Athens will service the city with a fleet of new near-zero-emissions vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG).

“It makes me happy to know that my friends and family here in Thousand Oaks will benefit,” Kurt Dansby, recycling coordinator for Athens Services, says about the opening of the facility. “Being a local from the area, I can already see how the center is going to [help us] make monumental strides in increasing waste diversion from the landfills through our recycling organics program [where residents can bring] unwanted organic materials to our composting center and [turn] it into soils that are given back to the community.”

According to the company, Athens Services is L.A. County’s largest privately owned waste diversion and recycling company, with 2,000 employees and a fleet of more than 1,000 trucks. The company, which has been family-owned and -operated since 1957, serves more than 30 municipalities and county areas.
