Peter F. Marcus, managing partner at World Steel Dynamics Inc., Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, died of heart failure in his home in Tuxedo Park, New York, Nov. 17, at 83 years old.
His obituary on Legacy.com describes Marcus as having lived “with intense passion for his family, work, music and hobbies. He never retired and spent his entire life visiting steel plants in the unglamorous outskirts of every continent.”
His passion extended to all areas of his life, according to his obituary, including cars, motorcycles, audio systems, stamp collecting, chess, pool, fishing and golfing. He had a love of music that included opera, Miles Davis, Bob Marley and Creedence Clearwater Revival.
Marcus, the oldest of two children, was born in 1938 to Albert V. Marcus and Ilo Freydberg Marcus. He was raised in Mount Vernon, New York, and attended Cornell and New York University Business School, graduating in 1960 and 1965, respectively. Marcus also served as a first lieutenant in the Armored Division in the U.S. Army.
He began his career on Wall Street at L.F. Rothschild in 1961. Marcus also worked for PaineWebber Mitchell Hutchins for 28 years before forming World Steel Dynamics, a global steel research, banking, consultancy and event company, in 1999. He was the top sell-side analyst in steel, with multidecade No. 1 ratings by Institutional Investor Magazine.
Marcus is survived by his sons, Andrew (wife, Catherine), Larry (wife, Corinne); his stepson, Todd Schreibman (wife, Marypat); his grandchildren, Alexander, Olivia, Julia and Maxine; his sister, Leslie Manes, and her husband, Jack; and his partner, Harriet Levine.
In lieu of gifts, donations to the California Jazz Conservatory in his honor are suggested.
A memorial service will be held at the University Club of New York, 1 West 54th Street, New York City, at 2 p.m. Dec. 5.
