Arkansas makes bid to land EAF mill

Both chambers of the state legislature of Arkansas have passed a recycling-related tax incentive that reportedly is intended to help land a scrap-fed electric arc furnace (EAF) steel mill being planned by Pittsburgh-based United States Steel Corp.

An online report by Little Rock, Arkansas-based KATV says Senate Bill (SB) 10 provides an income tax credit to waste reduction or recycling equipment and says the incentive “is because U.S. Steel is considering Arkansas as the new home to another steel mill plant [to] be located in northeast part of the state.”

The same article quotes an Arkansas state senator as saying “bringing in these big steel mills” has added to the prosperity of northeast Arkansas. KATV also reports the states of Alabama and Mississippi as neighbors who likewise are presenting incentives to U.S. Steel.

Arkansas serves as the home to Big River Steel, an EAF producer now owned by U.S. Steel. North Carolina-based Nucor Corp. also has high tonnage EAF mills in Arkansas.
