US Steel promotes chief operating officer of Big River Steel Works

Pittsburgh-based United States Steel Corp. has named Daniel R. Brown as its senior vice president of advanced technology steelmaking and chief operating officer of Big River Steel Works. In this role, Brown will be responsible for flat-roll steel production currently in place and planned in Arkansas that uses electric arc furnaces (EAF), endless strip production (ESP), electrical steel and advanced finishing facilities.

According to a news release from U.S. Steel, Brown previously served as a vice president at U.S. Steel. He will continue to report to U.S. Steel President and CEO David B. Burritt.

“Dan Brown is the highly capable, engaged, and effective leader you hope to find in your organization,” Burritt says. “As the leader of Big River Steel, he has been remarkable and we will need even more of his talents with the planned addition of another technologically advanced mill, electrical steel production capabilities and industry leading finishing capabilities. As an integral member of the executive team Dan’s advancement is consistent with his significant value to the company.”

The company says Brown will continue to serve as chief operating officer of Big River Steel as well as the new mill. The company recently announced plans to build an EAF steel mill in Osceola, Arkansas, that is expected to break ground this year, with project completion and full operation anticipated by 2024.

Brown joined U.S. Steel in July 1994 as a management associate in the Mon Valley Works Cold Mill and continued through a series of positions of increasing responsibility in the United States and Europe. From 2019 to June 2021, he served as general manager of U.S. Steel’s Great Lakes Works. Prior to that he was the plant manager of primary operations at U.S. Steel’s Gary Works. He graduated from Penn State University with a bachelor’s degree in business logistics and earned an MBA from Duquesne University in 1998.
