General Motors (GM) has signed a deal with Toronto-based Sparta Group and its e-waste recycling division, ERS International, to recycle electronics from General Motors Canada’s 5.1 million-square-foot manufacturing facility in Oshawa, Ontario.

According to Sparta, ERS International is a high-security electronics recycler with a sophisticated processing facility in the east end of Toronto. The company offers a variety of services, including e-waste destruction and recycling, secure data destruction and manufacturing, as well as asset tracking and remarketing.

Under the terms of the agreement, the ERS facility will take in used electronics from GM’s Oshawa plant, track the materials throughout the recycling process and provide GM with certificates of destruction. In addition to handling e-waste from the Oshawa facility’s production lines, ERS also will handle electronics recycling for the GM administrative department in Oshawa.

“The agreement with General Motors, which is such an illustrious, well-known brand, will provide us with added streams of revenue and allow us to divert literally thousands and thousands of tonnes of waste from landfill,” Sparta President and Chief Technology Officer John O’Bireck says.

O’Bireck says ERS has “truckload after truckload” of e-waste being offloaded at its processing facility every day, but that the company is structured to recycle high volumes of material.

He continues, “Since we are the only e-waste recycling facility in North America with an advanced laboratory, we can efficiently extract valuable metals, including gold, silver and palladium, all while tracking each item to account for 100 percent of the waste throughout the recycling process.”
