The city of New Orleans has signed new contracts for trash collection and recycling services in the city’s service areas 2 and 3.

The city says it is contracting with New Orleans-based IV Waste LLC to service its Service Area 2, which includes the Lakeview, Gentilly, parts of Mid-City, Bywater and Marigny neighborhoods of New Orleans. The city is contracting with Longwood, Florida-based Waste Pro to service its Service Area 3, which includes the Lower Ninth Ward and New Orleans East neighborhoods of the city.

“In preparing our 2023 budget, my administration has devoted more time, more energy and more resources to responding to our most pressing and urgent needs, and one of those needs is focusing heavily on cleaning up the city of New Orleans,” says New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell.

She adds that signing these new contracts, “represents a long-term investment in cleaning up this city holistically. Our new contractors will most certainly provide the residents with what we know they deserve, while demonstrating to the residents that we are well equipped with the best contractors to perform these enhanced and more efficient services.”

Both contracts are seven-year agreements with New Orleans. Under the contracts, IV Waste and Waste Pro will use new equipment, a real-time GPS tracking system, a 360-degree view camera system and route management technologies.

New Orleans says it had suspended curbside recycling for its service areas 2 and 3, and these contracts will enable it to resume curbside recycling in those areas.

“For over a year, residents have been patient as we solicited new contracts for service areas 2 and 3,” says New Orleans Sanitation Director Matt Torri. “Beginning Nov. 7, no longer do households have to worry about missed trash collection, debris being left behind or not receiving a replacement cart.”

In the fall of 2021, New Orleans also had transitioned to once-a-week trash collection. Under these new contract agreements, the city will continue to provide once-a-week trash collection services. The services also will provide new 95-gallon trash and recycling carts to residents who request an additional container.

“Every day, we look at every truck and every route, as well as the drivers and the hoppers to ensure they are providing the best service to residents,” says Sidney Torres, owner and president of IV Waste. “The amount of energy behind starting this process is incredible, and we are super excited about this contract. There is one thing people in the area we are responsible for don’t have to worry about, and that is trash and recycling being picked up on time with nothing left behind.”

“We are excited to start a new partnership with the City of New Orleans,” says Jesse Murphy, divisional vice president of Waste Pro. “We look forward to enhancing the city’s solid waste collections and providing the residents in the city of New Orleans with the services known in our industry as the distinguishable difference.”
