Primetals, Tata agreement could boost EAF production

Primetals Technologies and India-based steel producer Tata Steel say they have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to “intensify” their collaboration on projects and technology related to “green steel and decarbonization.” A signing ceremony took place at Tata Steel’s headquarters in Mumbai.
Primetals Technologies develops and produces a range of steel mill technology, although some of it focuses on efficiently producing and introducing hot liquid metal (including melted scrap) into electric arc furnace (EAF) or basic oxygen furnace (BOF) production lines.
The two companies say the new MOU provides for Primetals Technologies, based in London, to provide Tata Steel “with engineering expertise as well as support in implementing green steel technology.”
Tata Steel says it is prioritizing decarbonization and is looking for methods to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045. Tata Steel describes itself as among the most geographically diversified global steelmakers, with operations and a commercial presence around the world.
“We are extremely excited to support Tata Steel in decarbonizing its production lines,” says Norbert Petermaier, executive vice president at Primetals. “Primetals Technologies is the global front runner, and we have a broad portfolio in the field of green steel production solutions, including hydrogen-based ironmaking, electric steelmaking, and endless casting and rolling technologies. As a part of the larger Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group, we also have innovations for carbon capture utilization and storage at our disposal.”
Regarding the impacts of its technology, Primetals says it touches upon “the fields of decarbonization, reduction in emissions, greater energy efficiency, and improved circularity and yield. The green steel portfolio covers the entire iron and steel production chain: upstream, downstream, metallurgical services, and electrics and automation.”
