Days after it released its updated sustainability targets, Delaware, Ohio-based packaging producer Greif Inc. announced it has received two awards that recognize the company for its leadership and continued commitment to corporate social responsibility.

Greif received an A- rating in climate change by New York-based nonprofit CDP, which runs a global disclosure system for entities to manage their environmental impact, as well as being named by Newsweek as one of America’s Most Responsible Companies for the fourth consecutive year.

“We are honored to receive these recognitions,” Greif President and CEO Ole Rosgaard says. “Our work to operate more responsibly and sustainably ensures we are doing the right thing for our colleagues, our customers, our planet and our shareholders.”

The A- rating from CDP puts Greif in the “Leadership” category, reflecting the company’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and effectively manage its climate risks and opportunities. According to Greif, CDP used a detailed methodology to assess nearly 20,000 companies that disclosed environmental data in 2022.

Scores of A to D- were awarded based on the comprehensiveness of the data disclosed, awareness and management of environmental risks and use of best practices associated with environmental leadership.

In addition, America’s Most Responsible Companies were selected based on their environmental, social and governance, or ESG, performance found in publicly available corporate social responsibility reports as well as the results of a third-party independent survey.

The awards come after Greif was named in November to the top 100 ESG companies by Investor’s Business Daily (IBD), a financial news and research organization. Greif ranked 49th overall and No. 1 among companies in the containers/packaging industry.

“We are honored that Greif has been recognized by IBD as an ESG leader,” Greif Vice President of Sustainability Aysu Katun said in November. “Our global team is committed to creating positive and lasting social, environmental and economic impacts across the world in order to deliver sustainable value for our customers, the environment and all Greif stakeholders.”
