The City of Monroe, Connecticut’s Planning and Zoning Commission has approved a permit for United Mining Northeast LLC to build a 68,000-square foot manufacturing facility that will process discarded glass so it can be used as a sand-like fly ash alternative in the production of concrete.

According to the permit, United Mining’s operations will take place entirely inside the facility and will provide a maximum buffer for adjacent residential properties.

The operation has been designed to preclude the need for materials blasting, according to United Mining, although some blasting may occur. Additionally, all equipment will have dust suppression controls, a water truck will be on site and all materials will continuously be watered down, according to terms of the permit.
