Atlas Holdings announced it has completed the acquisition of Crown Paper Group, which includes Port Townsend Paper Corp. and Crown Corrugated Co. for an undisclosed amount.

Crown Paper Group is an independent regional containerboard business with operations in the Pacific Northwest and western Canada. It operates an integrated containerboard mill, two converting facilities and three company-operated distribution centers. Port Townsend Paper provides recycled and virgin kraft containerboard, kraft pulp and specialty products in Port Townsend, Washington, and the two converting facilities—known as Crown Packaging and Boxmaster—operate throughout British Columbia and Alberta.

“It is always an exciting day when we can welcome a great paper and packaging company to the Atlas family of manufacturing, distribution and logistics businesses,” Atlas co-founder and Managing Parter Tim Fazio says.

“Atlas planted its roots in paper when we were founded with the purchase of a single corrugated medium mill in Indiana, preserving jobs and transforming operations to lay a strong foundation for future growth. Now, more than two decades later, paper, packaging and allied industries remain an important and growing sector for Atlas.”

The Greenwich, Connecticut-based investment group also announced the appointment of paper and packaging industry executive Randy Nebel as chairman of the Crown board of directors. Nebel previously served as president and CEO of Verso Corp., a North American specialty and packaging paper and market pulp producer, and was president of Longview Fibre Paper & Packaging, a containerboard, corrugated and specialty paper manufacturer.

“Our goal is simple: We will be a superb employer, a trusted steward of our communities and a valued partner for our customers and suppliers,” Nebel says.

Crown Paper Group acquired Port Townsend Paper in 2015. According to the most recent data from the company, Port Townsend Paper recycles one-third of all old corrugated containers in Washington state and produces 325,000 tons annually.
